Abstract
A new competitive environment has been created due to the changing balance between private owned freight cars and the rolling stock, attached to the companies run by the state. The author argues that the economic factors become more important and create incentives for innovations and new solutions not only for the infrastructure owner, which is JSC Russian railways, but for rolling stock and freight owners as well.

Abstract
Adequate assessment of the financial performance of a transportation company has a decisive importance for the organization itself as well as for its prospective partners. However, it is not always easy to achieve the reliable estimation, common understanding of economic categories, classes, capital backing, and investment relations. There is no common scientifically substantiated approach to the problem, therefore one can see a growing demand for engineering of rational methodology of analysis of financial performance.
